Simple Recipe: How to Make a Basic Toor Dal (Serves 3-4)

- Rinse: Take 1 cup My Natural Unpolished Toor Dal and rinse it thoroughly under running water 2-3 times.
- Pressure Cook: Transfer the rinsed dal to a pressure cooker. Add 3 cups of water, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles on medium flame until soft and well-cooked. Let the pressure release naturally.
- Mash: Lightly mash the dal for a creamy consistency. Add more hot water if you prefer a thinner dal.
- Prepare Tempering (Tadka): In a separate small pan, heat 1-2 tablespoons of ghee or oil. Add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add 1-2 dry red chillies, a few curry leaves, and a pinch of asafoetida. You can also add finely chopped onion, ginger, and garlic at this stage and sauté until golden.
- Combine & Serve: Pour the hot tempering over the cooked dal. Mix well. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or paratha.
