Simple Recipe: How to Make Classic Chana Dal Fry (Serves 3-4):
Prepare a delicious and comforting Chana Dal Fry effortlessly with My Natural Bengal Gram (Senagalu)!
- Soak: Rinse 1 cup My Natural Bengal Gram (Senagalu). Soak in water for 2-3 hours (or 30 mins in hot water) for quicker cooking.
- Pressure Cook: Drain soaked dal. Pressure cook with 2.5-3 cups fresh water, 1/2 tsp turmeric, and salt for 5-6 whistles until tender but not mushy.
- Prepare Tadka: In a separate pan, heat 1.5 tbsp ghee/oil. Add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, and a pinch of asafoetida (hing). Once they splutter, add 1 chopped onion, ginger-garlic paste, and green chillies. Sauté until onions are golden.
- Add Tomatoes & Spices: Add 1 chopped tomato. Cook until soft. Add 1 tsp coriander powder, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, and 1/2 tsp garam masala. Cook for 2 minutes.
- Combine & Simmer: Add the cooked Chana Dal (with its cooking water) to the tadka. Mix well and bring to a simmer. Cook for 7-10 minutes, allowing flavours to meld and consistency to thicken.
- Garnish & Serve: Garnish with fresh coriander. Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or paratha.
